This is a jacquard “edition” of the original weaving, N.luetkeana. N Much like print making traditions, I have woven limited editions made at a more accessible price point.
On the original weaving: Fall is when big storms roll in and bring tangles of bull kelp to the shore. Bull Kelp, aka Nereocystis luetkeana, is a beautiful brown algae that creates curvaceous shapes and delicious smells. I sketched an image of bull kelp last fall and wove it, creating N. luetkeana.
Throughout my day-job career, I have had the opportunity to design and develop textiles for apparel. That range has been from weaving handlooms and designing jacquards for Pendleton Woolen Mills, teaching others, and developing textiles for Columbia Sportswear. Because I’ve had access to scaled versions of this industry and I haven’t had easy access/time to TC2 looms, I’ve created my own style of analog to digital to analog and back to digital.
I am only making five of these editions. The first was donated to the Elakha Alliance for an auction to benefit bringing otters back to Oregon waters. There are four remaining.
