Salty Indigo Flax Sea is woven of North Oregon grown, processed, and spun flax. This project started in 2017 in my front yard in Seaside, Oregon. If I would have known how long it would take me to produce a handwoven linen textile, I may have thought twice. It was a labor of love, sweat, and invention.
When I finally started to design this piece, I was thinking of how this fiber was worth gold and had a gold hue. I wanted to show it as dripping gold on another version of gold to me-a deep indigo yarn. As I continued to imagine this composition, I thought of gold pooling at the bottom…this inspired me to add a metallic yarn at the bottom of the drips. I rarely use synthetic yarn but this piece called for it.
